Games to play on a roadtrip

Are you and your friends or family planning a road trip? If so, chances are at one point you’ll start to get bored in the car. Before tablets and podcasts, we used games to keep us entertained. For your next road trip, try some of these games to keep you going along the way, no tablets, phones or WIFI required 😉 They can instantly make any journey more fun and enjoyable.

I Spy

A road trip classic. “I Spy with My Little Eye” is perfect for young children. One person spots something inside or outside the car and says: “I spy with my little eyes, something that’s blue.” Everyone else takes turns trying to guess the mystery item. The first one to correctly guess is the next to take a turn.

 

The Alphabet Game

This is the classic alphabet game, everyone knows and loves. Go through alphabet using words on signs

You are trying to find words in alphabetical order
You can use billboards, business and road signs
You can’t use license plates
The first one to get to the end of the alphabet wins

 

I’m going a Picnic

This is a twist on the classic alphabet game. The first person says “I’m going on a picnic, and I’m bringing” followed by an item that begins with the letter A, like Apple. The second player repeats the line with the first item, then adds a word beginning with a “B” like ball. The winner is the one who can recite the most items in alphabetical order.

 

The License Plate Game

You can really get creative with this game, anything goes, there are no wrong answers 😊

Word follow up

The first player shouts out a word. The next player word must start with the last letter of the previous player’s word. For instance, you start out with ‘towel’, your child needs to come up word that’s starts with a letter “L”. No repeating words!!!! An extra twist, for older players by deciding on a theme before you begin, like animals or countries

 

Road Trip Bingo

For this game you need to prepare bingo papers ahead, but it is worth your time because this game is a crowd pleaser.

You can use the ready ones, google  FREE Travel Bingo Cards or you can make your own, consider themes of fast food restaurants, gas stations, type of cars. Make sure there are enough markers available!!

 

Hum the Tune

You don’t have to be able to sing well to play this game. Each player takes a turn humming the chorus of a song and then if another player knows what it is, they can join in and start humming with you. Then shout out the name of song and you have a winner!!

A word in a song

Find a word and challenge everyone to find as many songs with that word. The one who found the most songs is the winner and has the next turn to find a new word for the next round of songs. During summer, the most favorite are those with sea, love and summer words.

 

Sweet or Sour

This game is something kids will love. Have each player take turns waving at passengers in nearby cars. If the people in that car wave back, they are sweet and that means you get a point. However, if they don’t wave back, they are sour and you get no points. The player who can get to ten points first wins.
